IPOPI’s Regional PID Patients Meeting: Latin America in Focus

Half way through October IPOPI had the pleasure of welcoming our Latin American members to the biennial regional meeting, organised in parallel with the Latin American Society for Immunodeficiencies (LASID) congress. This well attended virtual meeting took place October 13-14 and brought together 35 patient representatives from 10 countries in the region (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Venezuela).

During the two days the programme zoomed in on themes such as the COVID-19 status in Latin America, Keys to diagnosis, Opening the door to treatments as well as Short-term thinking and acting. The participants also learnt about How to lead an NMO during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing the important work they are doing in their countries.

In addition, the meeting hosted several workshops, where the participants were introduced to the fictional Latin American country “Moraxica”, a country in which challenges concerning diagnosis were many. Each participant was ascribed the role as a board member of the national patient organisation PID Moraxica and asked to discuss a set of challenges they were given regarding diagnosis, identify solutions regarding treatment access issues, as well as work to improve their communication skills.

It was a well appreciated two-day meeting with participation from all over Latin America. The attendees got the opportunity to learn from PID experts on a wide range of important topics, strengthen ties between peers, and exchange experience and skills build for the future, in order to continue the work in their national patient organisations.
