Educational Webinar on Oral Hygiene and Treatment for PID Patients

Oral problems are common and often troublesome for PID patients of all ages. PID Tsubasa-no-Kai, the Japanese PID patients’ organisation, held a hybrid educational session on oral hygiene and dental treatment on November 16. They invited a paediatric dentist from the Institute of Science Tokyo Hospital as the speaker, who treats children with severe conditions, including PID. Questions from participants were collected in advance, and the speaker’s answers were incorporated into the lecture.

The lecture covered a wide range of topics—from orthodontic treatment for children to dental implants for adults. Although perfect prevention unfortunately does not exist, the session reinforced the importance of keeping the oral cavity clean and highlighted that oral issues are something nearly all PID patients experience. Participants also learned that in Japan, only patients with hyper-IgE syndrome are eligible for financial coverage for orthodontic treatment. Hearing about the experiences of other PID patients can help individuals make better-informed decisions about their own care.

After the lecture, an in-person social gathering was held, providing an opportunity for participants to connect. Due in part to a widespread influenza outbreak, attendance was smaller than expected, but the gathering was warm and friendly.

PID Tsubasa-no-Kai plans to continue hosting lectures on topics of high interest to PID patients.
