A Spotlight on Blood and Plasma Collection

The World commemorates Blood and Plasma donors on June 14

Under the slogan “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often”, the world commemorated World Blood Donor Day on June 14. The global celebration was used to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, including immunoglobulin replacement therapies, and to thank donors for their life-saving gifts.  For the first time, this year’s campaign included plasma in its slogan, showing its increasing importance as well as increasing awareness among decision-makers and stakeholders.

New legislation underway in the European Union

IPOPI used this global campaign to continue its efforts in educating policy makers about the uniqueness of plasma and how it is critical for patients with primary immunodeficiencies. This year’s edition was particularly relevant for the European Union, as the future legislation on blood and plasma collection is being discussed and debated. For that reason, a communication campaign has been developed to spread knowledge and science-based facts on key elements regarding plasma collection, to ensure that the future EU legislation is patient-centred. Many of IPOPI’s NMOs have joined this campaign and helped spread the word about plasma collection’s importance in their countries and regions.
