Towards a Peru Where No One is Invisible: Visibility and Justice for PID Patients

In Peru, healthcare remains a privilege accessible to only a few. For those living with primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs), this reality translates into systemic neglect. Public hospitals lack specialists to treat adult PID patients and no specialised centres are offering the comprehensive care these conditions demand. The absence of infrastructure, combined with widespread ignorance, leads to delayed diagnoses, inadequate treatments and, in many cases, irreversible consequences for those affected.

In response to this reality, “We Are Not Invisible – IDP Peru” has emerged. This association, currently in the process of legal formalisation, has a clear and urgent mission: to change this situation. Its purpose goes beyond raising awareness of PID patients—it demands a committed and specialised healthcare system that provides proper and dignified treatment for every individual affected. The association’s efforts focus on securing the establishment of specialised centres, training healthcare professionals and ensuring timely diagnoses. It also advocates for research into PIDs to guarantee that each patient receives treatment tailored to their specific condition. Their tireless work seeks to mobilise not only the authorities but also society at large, whose indifference has played a significant role in the invisibility of these individuals.

The challenge faced by “We Are Not Invisible – IDP Peru” is monumental, but their determination is even greater. Its leaders firmly believe that change is only possible if all sectors get involved, from healthcare authorities to the general population. The movement also seeks international support, recognising that external solidarity could be key to Peru realising that this fight is urgent and must not be ignored. In Peru, the invisibility of PID patients is not solely the result of a lack of resources; it is also a consequence of indifference. But this must change.

“We Are Not Invisible – IDP Peru” will continue its fight until it secures a future where healthcare is a genuine right, and no one is forgotten.
