Educational Webinar about the Journey of IG product development

Inspired by the sessions given by IPOPI at the Asia Patients Meeting held in March, in Tokyo, on November 23, PID Tsubasa-no-Kai, the Japanese PID patients’ organisation held an educational webinar about the journey of IG product development from donated blood and plasma. We welcomed speakers from the Japanese Red Cross Society and Takeda Pharmaceuticals. The sessions were informative and tailored for easy understanding for our expected audience aged over 10. This allowed participants to gain deeper insights into the topic and clarify the questions about the process.

Surprisingly, the supply of IG products in Japan is over 80% and blood donation did not decrease in Japan even during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, only 3% of the Japanese population donates blood. Despite the willingness of people to donate blood, many are disqualified for various reasons including health issues, recent travel to areas with certain diseases, or medications that potential donors are taking. The total number of potential blood donors amounts to 10% of the actual blood donors.

Participants had an opportunity to learn that the blood donation program and production of IG products are conducted in Japan under strict controls.
