IPFA/PEI Workshop on Surveillance and Screening of Blood Borne Pathogens

During 21-22 September, IPOPI had the opportunity to attend the 28th International Workshop on Surveillance and Screening of Blood Borne Pathogens, organised by the International Plasma and Fractionation Association (IPFA) and Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) in Porto (Portugal). This 2-day workshop had originally been planned for 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

The workshop brought together international experts with an interest in and responsibility for maintaining a safe and secure supply of transfusion products for patient care in all regions of the world. The meeting was attended by 158 delegates from 30 countries.

A comprehensive programme
The conference was an international gathering that continued the history of fostering scientific discussion and stimulating debate in an environment of collaboration and shared objectives. The comprehensive programme touched upon issues such as the role of blood donors in pandemic surveillance, transfusion safety and blood-derived therapeutics, donor deferral/recruitment issues, emerging pathogens and much more.

The next IPFA/PEI Workshop will take place 10-11 May 2023 in Bologna, Italy.
