Connecting Community: How IDFA’s Coffee Clubs Are Reducing Isolation for Australians Living with Immunodeficiency
The Immune Deficiencies Foundation Australia (IDFA) is committed to creating meaningful connections and support for people living with immunodeficiencies across the country. One impactful initiative to emerge in recent years has been our Coffee Clubs—small, informal gatherings designed to bring individuals and families affected by immunodeficiencies together in a warm, welcoming environment.
For many Australians living with an immunodeficiency, isolation is a significant challenge. Geographic distance, recurring illness, and limited local awareness often leave individuals feeling disconnected from others who truly understand their experiences. IDFA’s Coffee Clubs aim to change that by providing an inclusive space where members can meet face-to-face to share personal experiences, ask questions, and build ongoing friendships.
Each Coffee Club is hosted by an IDFA volunteer or staff member and held in local community cafés. These sessions are intentionally informal—there are no presentations or structured agendas—allowing members to guide the conversation, talk openly about life with an immunodeficiency, and support one another in ways that feel genuine and personal.
To ensure these gatherings are accessible to all, IDFA provides each Coffee Club participant with a gift card to cover the cost of a coffee and a small treat for those attending. This removes financial barriers and helps create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved. IDFA also actively supports hosts by promoting Coffee Club meetups to members living in the surrounding area, helping to boost participation and ensure that no one misses the chance to connect with others in their immunodeficiency community.
Participants regularly tell us how valuable these gatherings are. Members often describe the relief of meeting “someone just like me” for the first time, and many have continued connecting outside the sessions, forming supportive networks that extend well beyond the event itself. Parents and carers also benefit, finding comfort and practical advice from others navigating similar challenges.
As IDFA continues to expand its national support programs, Coffee Clubs remain a cornerstone of our community engagement. We are proud to offer these safe, inclusive spaces and will continue growing the initiative so that more Australians affected by immunodeficiencies can experience the power of connection.
