Germany’s First National Open PID Patient Day: A Major Milestone for Awareness and Exchange
In March 2025, DSAI e.V. – the German Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies – hosted the country’s first national PID Patient Day in Frankfurt am Main. This conference was designed not only for members of DSAI but also for all individuals affected by primary immunodeficiencies and autoinflammatory conditions, including their families and caregivers. The large-scale event was held in a centrally located conference hotel, easily accessible from all regions of Germany, and provided a unique space for learning, sharing, and networking across the PID community.
Participants had the opportunity to attend engaging and practice-oriented lectures by leading experts from university hospitals and specialised centres. Highlights included talks on gene therapy by Prof. Dr. Bodo Grimbacher (Freiburg), updates on autoinflammation by PD Dr Henner Morbach (Würzburg), and a session on vaccinations by Dr. Leif Hanitsch (Berlin). The program also addressed practical topics such as patient training (Dr Maria Fasshauer, Leipzig), legal advice for disability recognition (Monika Grimm), and nutritional guidance for gastrointestinal issues (Claudia Hitzelsperger). A large industry exhibition showcased therapy options, medical aids, and homecare services. While parents attended these informative sessions, children enjoyed professional childcare, including a magic show.
DSAI also presented its comprehensive work and impact over the past year, highlighting the ongoing dedication of its regional group leaders and national office team. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the event as “informative, warm, and inspiring.” The great success of this inaugural Patient Day has already led to plans for a second edition, scheduled for March 2026.
DSAI extends its heartfelt thanks to the expert speakers for their passionate contributions and to the event’s sponsors, whose generous support made this important gathering possible.
