Plasma For Life Campaign – Lifeblood Australia Partnership

To mark International Plasma Awareness Week (6–10 October), the Immune Deficiencies Foundation Australia (IDFA) partnered with Lifeblood Australia to host plasma parties across the country.

Since the launch of the Plasma for Life campaign in June, IDFA has been working closely with members to raise awareness of the vital need for plasma donations.

Plasma is lifesaving. It contains antibodies that protect people with weakened immune systems by preventing disease and infection. Across Australia, thousands rely on plasma therapies every day.

Despite being among the top three users of plasma medications per capita worldwide, fewer than 1% of Australians currently donate plasma – even though Lifeblood estimates more than 10 million people are eligible. As donations in Australia are entirely voluntary and non-paid, ensuring a sufficient and ongoing plasma supply requires significant effort.

IDFA members are playing an active role in the campaign, creating their own recipient teams and sharing personal stories to inspire friends, families and colleagues to donate. With support from IDFA, members are also hosting plasma parties throughout October at Lifeblood centres in NSW, ACT, TAS, WA and QLD. These festive yellow gatherings give patients and carers the chance to meet donors, share their experiences, and personally thank them for providing the treatments they rely on.

In total, IDFA contributed to 10 plasma parties with more than 14 members in attendance. Additionally, members highlighted their story through local media opportunities and through their own social media networks to raise awareness for the need for plasma donations. Four IDFA members created Lifeblood recipient teams to encourage their community to donate in/their child’s honour.

This nationwide initiative is strengthening awareness of plasma donation and shining a spotlight on the community spirit that sustains patients with primary immunodeficiencies and other conditions.

Plasma for Life is not just a campaign—it’s a movement to save lives, one donation at a time.
