IRIS Brings the Immune System to Life Through Comics
The French patient organisation IRIS has launched an exciting new educational initiative, Mission Immunité DIP, a comic book designed to make the immune system and primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) easier to understand. By combining illustrations with accessible explanations, this project offers a new way to explore a complex medical subject, helping patients, families and the wider public become more familiar with the role of the immune system and the challenges associated with PIDs.
Page after page, le reader can discover how Captain Mascot and Claudia (one of IRIS stars) communicate under sustained attack by microbes and viruses, devise defence strategies, win battles, strive to prevent further conflicts, and, above all, share their experiences to grow ever stronger!
By transforming complex concepts into visual storytelling, IRIS hopes to encourage curiosity, facilitate discussions and provide families with a useful resource to better understand these rare conditions.
Beyond its educational purpose, this initiative reflects IRIS’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness of PIDs and empowering the patient community through accessible information. The comic book also illustrates how creative communication tools can complement traditional patient education materials, helping to make medical knowledge more inclusive and easier to share. The next step of this project is to provide a virtual reality experience based on the *comic*.
With Mission Immunité DIP, IRIS demonstrates that learning about health does not always have to be complicated. By bringing science and storytelling together, the association hopes to inspire other patient organisations to explore innovative ways of engaging their communities.
