News from the European Medicines Agency
It has been a busy end of the year for IPOPI at the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Aside from the meeting attended by Martine Pergent on Artificial Intelligence (you can read the article here), there have been other very interesting meetings taking place in the past months.
- Meeting of the Patients’ and Consumers’ Working Party (PCWP) met on 20 November 2024. Many interesting and relevant topics were discussed at the meeting including the EMA workplan on artificial intelligence, work developed on medicine shortages and critical medicines, and on patient experience data. These and other topics are currently under discussion to ensure that citizens in the EU can have access, in a sustained manner, to safe, efficacious and quality innovative medicines.
- A Stakeholder Forum on Big Data, on 28 November 2025, in which the discussions focused on the value of real-world data for the generation of evidence for regulatory decision-making and the improvement of medicine development. The EU is seeking to strengthen data governance and increase the exchange of data while progressing on evidence generation, interoperability and use across European countries.
- Scientific Symposium on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products: “Contribution, evolution and revolution”, on 10 October 2024. The meeting went over the achievements reached by the European legislation on advanced therapies in the past 25 years and the challenges posed to the current framework by novel and innovative products.
