IPOPI African PID Patients Meeting: Uniting Voices to Strengthen PID Care Across Africa

The 9th African PID Patients Meeting, held on June 26–27, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, took place in parallel with the African Society for Immunodeficiency (ASID) Congress.

Bringing together 30 patient leaders and medical experts from Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda, the two-day meeting fostered exchange, learning, and collaboration to advance the diagnosis, care, and recognition of Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs) across Africa..

The meeting explored key topics shaping the region’s PID landscape — from diagnosis and genetics to vaccination, plasma collection, treatment access, and mental health. Participants shared national updates and identified common challenges, such as delayed diagnosis, limited access to immunoglobulin therapies, and the need for stronger recognition of Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs).

“If you get diagnosed and have treatment, you can lead a fulfilling life” shared Timothy from Uganda — a statement that captured the meeting’s spirit of hope and determination.

The meeting also highlighted the growing strength of African patient organisations and their vital role in raising awareness, advocating for policy change, and supporting families affected by PIDs.

IPOPI warmly thanks all participants, speakers, and partner organisations for their contributions, in particular the African Society for Immunodeficiency (ASID) for their kind support. Together, we continue to build a stronger voice for PID patients across Africa.
