AEDIP celebrates, in a special event, a historic milestone: the inclusion of SCID in the Neonatal Screening

On July 18th, the Spanish Association of Primary Immunodeficiencies (AEDIP) organised a very special event to celebrate a historic milestone for patients and families affected by primary immunodeficiencies in Spain. Thanks to the collective effort of numerous individuals, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) has finally been included in the Basic Neonatal Screening Service Portfolio of the Spanish National Health System. This progress signifies a substantial improvement in the early detection and timely treatment of this disease, which will undoubtedly save lives and enhance the quality of life for many children as it is implemented nationwide.

The event was filled with emotion and gratitude, where not only the hard work of those who laboured tirelessly to achieve this accomplishment was recognised, but also the humanitarian and social impact it carries. As was mentioned throughout the day, this measure is a reflection of the solidarity and collective strength between healthcare professionals and the Patient Association. Together, from different fronts, they have united to improve their community and protect the most vulnerable, demonstrating that even in times of uncertainty, there is still hope and the ability to bring about positive change.

They are not just celebrating a regulatory change; they are celebrating saving lives. By including SCID in the neonatal screening, they are not only guaranteeing earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments, but also offering a future to those who were previously born with an expiration date. This milestone is proof that, through joint effort, they have managed to change not just the fate of a specific number of patients, but that of an entire community. They are celebrating a step toward a future full of hope, where families affected by this disease can see their children grow, play, fall in love, and live a full life. This achievement belongs to the entire group of AEDIP collaborators who have worked tirelessly for over 7 years since the project was first initiated under the leadership of the Association.
